Estate Sewing Finds - Picture heavy

I went to another estate sale today that offered a smorgasbord of sewing goods.

I started out with stuff I've already got but at 50 cents or a dollar a piece I just couldn't pass on them.

Next I moved on to some vintage patterns and fabric

Can you ever have enough tracing paper?? Not at $1 for the whole batch!

This is some kind of weird curling iron for clothes! Hope I don't burn down the house when I plug it in. Seriously! It too was $1.

And the piece de resistance...

When was the last time you saw one of these? Depending on how old you are, you may not even know what it is. It's what fabric stores use to used to measure your fabric. I don't know what I'm going to use it for...maybe just for decoration but I love it! It makes me all nostalgic!

In other news, I finally bought the fabric for my dress today. I hope to work on pattern alterations tomorrow and the dress itself no later than Monday. I work better under pressure or at least that's what I keep telling myself. I stopped into David's Bridal today for snoop shopping. One thing I found out is that the heavily beaded bodiced gowns have a lapped zipper in the back, not invisible. The beading is totally removed from the underside of the lap. Interesting!

  2. OMG, I'm so jealous but if you want to get rid of some of your duplicates you know where to find me lol. I immediately knew what the fabric cutting tool was , it made me miss my Mom, I remember her buying tons of fabric and that's what they used way-back-when, awesome score. I'm so green right now.

  3. Great finds! And I love that fabric meter. When I was in high school I worked in a fabric store, and that is how we measured fabric. Then you hit the lever, and it makes a little notch in the fabric that tells you where to cut. I haven't seen one of those in FOREVER!!!

  4. Seriously, I thought I was the queen of procrastination! You're going to be hemming the dress while you're saying your vows!

  5. When I was a teen I worked in a fabric store for .75 an hour! I used the device you have pictured for measuring fabric. I haven't seen one in years. The problem with it is it sometimes didn't measure accurately if the fabric was stretchy or whatever. I love this post. I will have to start going to estate sales. I will be posting a picture of my little grand in her/my bridesmaid dress.
