I am finally able to knit on my knitting machines again. I haven't knit in the 10 years that I been married. We don't have a basement and there just wasn't enough room. It was obvious my husband wasn't ever going to finish the addition made to the house and me a craft room, but what I have now is just as good. He moved the furniture out of the living and dining room, which we weren't using, and I converted it into my paper crafting and knitting space. I currently have three machines up, one with a motor with plans to add two more machines and one more motor. Oh happy day.

I've already knit and constructed my first two garments in 10 years--a jacket and a skirt. Can you believe it? The yarn had been around that long and so has the pattern. I used Simplicity 9361, released in 1995. I made view B. I'd made it previously in a different color of the same yarn. This time I did add a bust dart...because I'm anal that way. Although I added the bust dart, I was still able to use the same schematic from before. I always draw myself a schematic and calculate the stitches and rows, based on my swatch, of each pattern piece much like what you see in knitting patterns. I took about four days to do the knitting and three days to do the blocking and the cutting of the pattern pieces. I could have done the knitting in less time but wasn't in any particular hurry.

I spent two days seaming the skirt seams by hand and sewing the knitting pieces by machine. It's easier to mark the pattern piece with wax and chalk markings. The buttonholes were made on the machine and I even sewed the buttons on by machine.
Although I'd been away from the machine for 10 years, I didn't miss a beat. When I tell you I hadn't forgotten a thing, believe it. I am so impressed by the notes I've kept and how organized they are. Nearly every technique I've learned over the years are kept in binders and further organized using dividers. Most technique pages are encased in page protectors! How impressive is that? I've already started on another knitted garment but I must admit, the pieces are over 10 years old. While searching through my knitting treasures I found a plastic bag with all the pieces for a garment--front, back and sleeves. I've already blocked the pieces but need to look through my patterns to find something that will fit the knit pieces. Expect to see more of my knit creations in the near future.
I "frankenpatterned" this design using two of my favorite patterns--Simplicity 2684 bodice and McCalls 6953 skirt. I've altered the 2684 bodice to fit me perfectly but the 6953 skirt presented more of a problem because the fabric was only 45" wide and I didn't have enough. Not to be deterred, I pinched out a pleat between each of the pattern pleats to narrow each of the skirt pieces and voila!

I didn't even cut the dress out until 9 pm on Halloween Eve...me and my procrastinating. All seemed to be going well until I decided it needed pockets. I couldn't find my favorite Mimi G pocket pattern from her maxi skirt download. I had to spend about 30 minutes looking for that. When I finally got the pockets cut and sewn it was nearing 1 am. I have to start getting ready for work at 6:30 am. I've got to get some sleep! I'm was going to line the bodice with the "burrito" method so the zipper still has to be installed. As I was tacking the top of the pocket to the bodice seam the sewing machine jammed. I cleared that jam about three times to no avail. At this point I'm exhausted but not deterred. I called it a night at 1:45 am.

I slept fit-fully until 5:30 am. I got up swapped out the jammed machine for a backup and finished the dress by 7 am. Thus the invisible zipper is "nearly invisible" as I'd never installed a zipper on "said backup" machine. I also didn't have time to be fooling around with a curved hem. I serged around the dress bottom. While I thought I was going to pair it with a fine-knit cardigan...it looked too "Mrs. Doubtfire" so I added a chunky necklace, cropped denim jacket and black suede over-the-knee boots. I absolutely loved my look. Of course when I got home from work I was too exhausted for pictures and while I thought this would be a "one of" wearing, it's so comfortable and fun I'm sure it will get lots more wear. It'll be a great conversation piece!

I think so except that my fabric has an "houndstooth-like" plaid design
Were the instructions easy to follow?

I'll admit this was not my first jacket "rodeo." I didn't use them at all. That's why I rated the pattern "Intermediate." Not sure how the instructions tackled the collar and lapel.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I didn't dislike anything about this pattern. I particularly like that it is above the hipline. That is a good proportion for my body. It has been in my stash for a while. I'm trying to not buy so many patterns but use ones I already own. I love a good princess seam bodice whether it be for a jacket, blouse or dress.
Fabric Used:
This fabric was from my stash. I don't remember when I got it...as a matter of fact I forgot I had it. I do know that it was from Fabric Mart and not recently!

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I cut a 18 through the neck and shoulders grading out to a size 22 in the hip. I love how well-drafted the armhole and sleeve cap are. I also did my usual 1" FBA following the Palmer/Pletsch instructions.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I've already cut it again and have several more pieces of fabric lined up. This will be my go-to jacket pattern for a while.

My "go-to" pattern for a quick and easy dress. I call it a sneaker dress because it looks just as good with sneakers as it does with heels.
Pattern Description:
Pullover, close-fitting top and dresses have button neck and front bands, and stitched hems.
Pattern Sizing:
XS-XXL which translates to sizes 4-26. I made the large
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Not really

Were the instructions easy to follow?
I didn't use them at all
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I really love this pattern because it is so versatile and includes a center back seam that enables me to use less fabric.
Fabric Used:
Cotton knit from JoAnn's. it has an "oxford-like" texture. I wish I could find more of it!
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I omitted the front button placket, I've added a 1" FBA (horizontal dart) as I do on all my patterns. I raised the neckline a little and added contrast armbands. I used the pocket pattern from McCall's 7061 because I love the shape and size of it and added contrast bands onto the pocket opening. I also shaved off some of the A-Line shape and turned up and top-stitched a 1 1/2" hem.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I've already used it multiple time and will use it many more
Conclusion:
This pattern was released in 2013 and is now out-of-print, but if you do have it in your stash it's worth digging out and using.
I used to love blogging but these days it seems to be such a chore. I think Instagram has made me lazy or maybe I was lazy all the time! LOL.
I'm still working on building a wardrobe around a few core pieces but have also made quite a few things that have nothing to do with anything. Am also working on the much dreaded alterations I need to make on some of my favorite pieces.
I made this dress for a sorority event and it went over really well. Although I've have the fabric for months, I waited until the last possible moment to sew it. I only had about 1 3/8 of a yard of fabric and cannot image using any other pattern. When I use regular size sequined fabric, I sew right over the sequins. Not so in this case. The dime-sized paillettes had to be removed for the seam allowance before sewing.
Pattern Description:
Misses'/Misses' petite dress. Semi-fitted through the bust, lined dress have neckline variations and back zipper.
Pattern Sizing:
8-24
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes it did
Were the instructions easy to follow?
I didn't use the instructions.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I think I bought this pattern because it has back darts but I didn't sew them in this dress
Fabric Used:
Dime sized sequins for mesh.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
The only alterations I made to the pattern were to enlarge the bust dart. I am so anal about drag lines pointing to the bust.

I overlaid the hem with the three inches of selvage on crosswise grain. That way I didn't have to turn under any sequins for the hem as it was only the mesh. The pattern was cut crosswise on the fabric.

Inside Armhole

I added piping to the neckline to stabilize. As I had to remove the sequins from the neckline to stabilize with the piping, I had to hand-sew sequins back on to fill in.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I think this will be my "go" pattern in a pinch when using sequined fabric.
Pattern Description:
Misses'/Miss petite pants in two lengths with individual pattern pieces for slim, average and curvy fit. I'm entering this pair into the jean/pants contest.
Pattern Sizing:
6-24 The pattern I actually used was made from a size 14 RTW pants and my best guest is a sewing size 18.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
I only used the instructions to construct the pockets. The instructions have you cut the rear pocket pieces of garment fabric which made no since at all to be so I didn't do it. I cut both of my pocket pattern pieces from lining fabric and only cut the pocket yoke from garment fabric.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I used a pattern I made using painter's tape from a RTW pair from 2010 so I already knew I'd like the fit.
Fabric Used:
I totally deconstructed a pair of pants from a few years ago. I've lost weight and wanted to experiment with placing a smaller pattern on top of the larger pair to make a smaller pair of pants. I'm pleasantly surprised that it worked like I expected. I purchased the fabric from Fabric Mart several years ago and while I did have enough of the fabric in my stash to start from scratch, I wanted to challenge myself with using a previously sewn pair of pants. I cut the fronts and back from the previous pants only using new fabric for the waistband and the pocket yoke. I used the previous waistband to cut facings for the hem because I wasn't about to cut the new fronts and backs long enough to accommodate a hem. The faux welt pocket piece was cut from remnants from the original pants.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
The only pattern pieces I used from the Simplicity pattern were the pockets, the fly and the underlap.. I love the pockets pieces as that are sewn right into the center front. It added a small amount of control and I will continue to use this piece in the future. To stabilize the pocket curve, I added piping because I couldn't find my twill tape. I love the effect. I decided to add slits to the inside seam hem for some added style. The waistband is from Simplicity 2860.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
This is going to be my go-to pants pattern. Although I'm using a pattern from 2010 I did have to remove one of the back waist darts, my hips are smaller which is an easy fix.
Conclusion:
I have no desire to reinvent the wheel, but I think I will try adding the pleats to my original pattern. If you're a member of Pattern Review please vote for me when voting starts
I hope the rest of the month goes better than today. After getting up bright and early this morning, 8 a.m. to be exact, I rushed off to an eye appointment for a checkup for a previously performed procedure. Imagine my surprise when they can't find me on the day's appointments as I remember the appointment isn't until Wednesday! April Fool's to myself!

Next, I spent more than an hour creating a blog post only to realize I lost it out somewhere in cyberspace...April Fool's again. Hopefully this time it'll work. I'm not sure this qualifies as a new make because the cardigan was made about 10 years ago and although I hadn't worn it more than twice, I couldn't part with it. The pattern is Simplicity 3634 view D. The ITY-like, faux-lace fabric is from Walmart. I made it right about the time I really started perfecting FBA's and I totally screwed up the alterations on the tank top. While I did wear it a few times, I hated the fit. I eventually threw it out. Fast forward 10 years and I decided to remake the tank and add the two pieces to my core wardrobe. Yes, I still had the fabric. Initially I liked the fabric so much that I went back to the store and bought the remainder of what was on the bolt...4 1/2 yards. (There's still quite a bit left. Maybe I'll make a dress). Maybe I didn't remake it before now is because it took me this long to locate it in my stash?? Could be, who knows.
I didn't use the Simplicity tank pattern this time. This time I used McCalls 6559 which I've altered from the original maxi dress. I love the back, cut-in armhole design.Frankly, I like it so much that this is my go-to tank top pattern. BTW I scored this cool hanging display last weekend. I somehow ended up at the local mall and took a quick walk through. Charlotte Russe is going out of business and selling everything including the fixtures. This supposedly plus-size, hanging display was a mere $10. I couldn't pass it up. It'll come in handy when I don't feel like using my Duct tape dressform which has my measurements to a tee.

Below, I've styled my "new" twinset with my Wardrobe skirt. Love it! Don't love some of the expressions on my face though. The photographer (husband) wanted to know why the funny faces. Excuse me! The faces are because you don't know what you're doing and I'm probably trying to explain it to you and you'res not listening...just snapping away like a maniac!
Then again, I could have been shooing the dog away from photo-bombing me. Either way these two pieces are a great addition to my Wardrobe. Stay tuned.

Pattern Description: Flared skirts have waistband, back zipper closing, length variations, and narrow hem.
Pattern Sizing:
6-22 I made a size 18
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Exactly
Were the instructions easy to follow?
The only time I used the instructions was to know that the zipper insertion included the zipper through the waistband.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
There was nothing that I disliked but I did add pockets. Like everyone else I am obsessed with pockets
Fabric Used:
100% cotton which I washed and dried before using.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I added pockets and two inches of length because I thought it would look better with a two inch hem as opposed to the 1 1/4" suggested and I used 1 1/2 elastic in the waistband to keep it from folding.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I will absolutely sew it again
Conclusion:
This is a great beginner project as the gathering should not be problem

So the skirt with the jacket yea or nay?? I've also got to the the "Fashion Police" photographer (aka the husband) to make sure I'm not making "duck lips" when he snaps the photo! And "tooting my own horn I've think I have great looking legs for a 62 year old!
The jacket is from Simplicity 4273 copyright 2006, the skirt is Simplicity 1760 copyright 2012. Both patterns are out of print. The pants are from a RTW pair that I copied using the "paper tape" method. The pattern is from 2010. Why try reinventing the wheel when I knew that I was back to my 2010 size! My only regret is that the fabric is some ratty polyester gabardine from JoAnn's that's been in my stash forever! Not only am I sewing with a plan...I'm also trying to create this entire wardrobe from my stash.

The three pieces passed the husband test. He asked it I made it. He thinks he's on the board of the Fashion Police so if he likes it that means a lot. What are you thoughts so far?

I didn't stop sewing I just wasn't taking the time to write about it. I'm going to give blogging another try. I hope you'll stay with me.I can't believe that it has been almost three years since my last post. Even prior to that my postings were somewhat sporadic. What can I say? Life got in the way. At one point I even had three blogs going. Man was that tiring. I think I'm going to combine all three. Sew my blog will now include not only my sewing but also my machine knitting (which I intend to start back doing), my doll clothes making and my paper crafting. It's my party and I can do what I want...LOL

I recently had a rather significant weight-loss and there is a down side to it. I really don't have anything to wear! That includes bras and panties. Oh I have a few smaller things that I didn't get rid of but that was purely by accident. I even have tunics and leggings that are too large. While I did alter a few things, I absolutely hate alterations and decided this is a prime opportunity to revamp my wardrobe and SWAP. There are several sewing challenges I plan to enter but I've also started my own.
First up is a three piece wardrobe I just finished, black, that I want to build around for the entire year. My plan is to use mostly fabrics from my stash. I'm really excited because for once I have a clear direction I want (need) to go in my sewing. One good thing about the weight-loss is that I am back to my 2010 size...mostly. This time my waist is slightly bigger and butt and thighs are smaller. Previously altered patterns now only need minor adjustments. Stay tuned!
White parties are all the rage in the Summer here in Michigan. I wanted something more than just plain old white and wanted something that would make a statement as well. My internet sewing pal Faye or at Faye's Sewing Adventure suggested the Hot Patterns Metropolitan Urban Gypsy Blouse. Thanks quite a mouthful for a garment name! While I'm not usually an independent pattern company fan, but I have had success with the Jalie Eleanore pant and with Cashmerette Appleton Dress. The Hot Pattern envelope describes it as

When you're in the mood to wear something pretty with a cool-girl vibe, reach for one of these beauties, perfect for light to medium-weight crisp or fluid fabrics, like crepe, voile, chambray, shirting, gauze, charmeuse or rayon: these also work gorgeously iin knits like silk(y) jersey, rayon, linen or modal. Loose-fit, pull-on, off-the-shoulder blouses have a neckband that fitted at the front and elasticated around the sides and back; the bodice has a gentle A-line cut with bust darts. Choose your favorite raglan sleeve length; 3/4 with a tied cuff, or just above the elbow with a deep elasticated cuff. Blouses finish with a narrow shirt-tail hem at the upper thigh with a narrow shirt-tail hem at the upper thigh, Chest patch pockets are optional; we've also included an optional internal stretch shelf bra as well as halter straps for easy wearing. You'll be amazed at how wearable these stunning blouses really are...tuck them into a high-waist tailored skirt or pant, wear them untucked over a skinny, flared or palazzo pant, or try them runway-style worn loose over a matching midi-length A-line skirt.

I don't totally agree with the description of how you could wear it, but to each his own.

I started out by tracing the pattern pieces onto Examination Table Paper which I get from my doctor's office. I usually ask for a roll about once a year. Tracing patterns is one of my least favorite things to do so one roll a year is more than enough.

I traced the size 20 which is the same size for the Big 4. I didn't want to take any chances with hiking up in the front so I made a cheater FBA by adding 1" to the length at center front. The pattern does have a slight hi-low design.

From there I followed the directions which were well written and although I did question the separate front band without elastic, I continued. That was a major mistake. Any seasoned sewer would know that adding a band with 1 1/2" wide elastic to only a portion of the band would create an obvious difference. HATED IT (in a sing songy voice). It screamed, "BECKY HOMECKY." By no stretch of the imagination did it look good. Luckily I had enough leftover fabric to cut one continuous band, insert elastic through the entire channel, attach to the blouse and voila'.

I used Confetti Dot fabric in my stash from Fabric Mart in silver and used JoAnn Fabrics Jet Set lining (only the front, back and band). The Confetti Dot was easy to cut but it did gum up the needle a little. As soon as I sewed the last stitch I chucked the needle in the garbage. I love the fit, the length and the comfort. I paired it with McCalls 6173 leggings. BTW I am wearing a strapless bra. The pattern called for 2 3/4 yards of fabric. I'm not sure I agree with that. I'll have to make it again to be sure. I highly recommend this top if you like or want to try the of-the-shoulder look.
Yes. It's me. You've probably wondered what was going on with me. I'm still here but just haven't wanted to blog. Even though I haven't been blogging I'm still sewing up a storm and all is well in my neck of the woods.

One project I've worked on this summer is a shirtdress. I wanted a well-fitting dress with style I chose McCalls 7380.

It was not until I downloaded this picture that I realize how out of proportion the skirt is relative to the bodice. That was the problem I had in sewing mine. I finally took 8" out of the skirt and got the fit I wanted. Below are pictures and my full review.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I particularly like the shaped hem. What I disliked is that there was so much fullness in the skirt. I cut off at least 8 inches in the side seam. I nearly scrapped this whole project and chalk it up as a wadder. In the end I'm glad I stuck it out.
Fabric Used:
Seersucker
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
First I made a 1" FBA adding it as a vertical waist dart. I added width to the back at the waist and added 1" to the length of the bodice and 2" to the skirt length. I omitted the fly button closure because I wanted my buttons to show. I added pockets to get it to the look I envisioned. Next time I won't add to the bodice length because it was hitting me at an odd spot although it did line up with my natural waist. I was able to sew a deeper waist seam to correct it.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
After all the work I did on the pattern I will sew it again. I can picture it in denim with the sleeves.
Conclusion:
Was a total pain in my neck but I love it especially with the pockets.
I told you'd there'd be more Appleton's to come. This is number three. It's fresh off of the sewing machine. I had to get a little creative with some of the pieces as I didn't really have enough fabric. I had to piece the ties together but intentionally cut the neck and front bands on the crossgrain. I also added sleeves bands that were cut on the crossgrain as well.
The photo on the right is more the true color. This fabric is from JoAnn's and has been maturing in the stash for a while! While the fit is fabulous, I'm not loving it right now because it's really giving me a "bathrobe" vibe. Maybe hair and makeup will make me feel better about it! Off to do Christmas gift embroidery and up after that...panties, panties, and more panties!

This time I added 2" to the bodice while adding 1" to to both the left and right neckband. I also added a cuff to the sleeves. I love it. The ties are much more comfortable two inches lower. The cuff gives it a more finished look The only thing that could make the dress better would be to add pockets and that will be easy enough to do.

I added thread belt loops on both sides to keep the ties in place and also added as snap at the bust crossover for modesty. The fabric is a Maggie London ITY Knit from Fabric Mart., I ordered it a couple of weeks ago when the ITY Knits were $3.50 a yard. This fabric feels so good against my skin. I could absolutely sleep in it. I was going to wear the dress with black pumps but found this forgotten shoes in my closet. I think they are a great nude color for my skintone, There will be many more Appletons in my future!
Pattern Description:
The description from Simplicity.com:
Learn to work with knit fabric while making these easy to wear tops featuring hi-lo hemline with or without contrast bands. Simplicity Learn to Sew Pattern Collection has easy sewing directions, perfect for beginners.
Pattern Sizing:
XXS-XXL I made the large
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow?
I didn't even look at them.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I like that it's a super easy basis dolman pattern. While I don't usually like dolman sleeve tops because of the wad of fabric that usually gathers at the underarm, not so with this top. Not sure if it is because of the cut or the fabric but I love it and this is actually my second one.
Fabric Used:
ITY Jersey from Fabric Mart
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
Although I usually make an FBA, because it is a Hi-Low design I decided against one. Although I rarely use the neckband pieces for knits but rather draft and cut my own, I used the one provided...mistake. It was too long. I had to removed it and shorten. This is actually my second top so for this version I cut the neckband 2" shorter than the pattern piece and it was perfect.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
This is going to be my new go-to knit top pattern. I'm wearing it with the McCalls 6643 knit skirt pattern View C.
I've been sewing up a storm. Haven't been blogging about it but take my word for it...but believe me, it's happening. I made two more pairs of Jalie Eleanore jeans, another Appleton dress and McCall's 7195. I need some casual tops to go with my new jeans. I chose Butterick 5218 and a Homespun cotton fabric from my stash.
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Super. The instructions for the front pleat were spot-on.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I liked the relaxed fit
Fabric Used:
100% Cotton Homespun from JoAnn Fabrics
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I didn't make any alterations but should have made a cheater FBA by adding 2" additional length to the center front. Luckily the high-low look is in style so it's not that big of a deal. Although I sewed View B, I added the pockets from View C and used the garment length and sleeves from View A. I cut bot the sleeves and the the pockets on the bias as I didn't want to have to worry about matching this uneven plaid.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I'll sew it again. I'd love to make it in a white linen blend. I'd recommend it to others if you don't mind the relaxed fit. Unfortunately it is out of print!
Conclusion:

The hardest part of the garment was finding a button that matched. I'll use the one button you see. Currently it's just stuck on. I like how the color blends and will be making the buttonholes later this evening.

I've seen these pants many times of Pattern Review but none of the sewers look like me. It seemed that only smaller sized were being sewn but the sometimes I do hop on the "bandwagon" and what everybody else is doing. I purchased the pattern from Pattern Review and it arrived soon after.

In case you didn't know I am mostly a Big 4 sewer. I know the adjustments I need to make but pants are always particularly problematic. I've got a butt and it's not going anywhere! I also hate tracing patterns. Seeing the lines sometimes presents a problem but mostly it because I just don't like doing it. So what an old broad supposed to do? I traced the pattern doing an episode of Project Runway. There's only seven pattern pieces and went very smoothly.

The pattern is described as Pull-On Jeans. Of course my first thought was "Mom Jeans" but the pattern goes on to say they are "stretch pull-on jeans (long or cropped) with wide waistband. Yoke, faux fly in the front, patch pockets in the back. Fitted fitted through waist and hips, straight from the knee down. Very easy to turn into skinny jeans. While I'm a 16 in RTW, someone wearing a size 20 in a pattern should never describe their jeans as "skinny." But I digress.

I chose a lightweight denim from my stash. After comparing to pattern to a pair of denim leggings-like pull-on RTW pants, I decided to add a 3" wedge underneath the back pocket and a 3/4" wedge to the crotch in the front. From their I followed the sewing directions. I will add this is my first Jalie pattern and I don't necessarily like that the directions are printed on the same single page as the pattern pieces.

The directions and illustrations are very good. An experienced sewer probably doesn't need them but I liked having them handy. Everything was straightforward. I used the size BB pattern and was skeptical about them fitting. Even when I got them to the "try-on" stage I was still skeptical. When I finally sewed on the waistband and had a "try-on" with shoes, I was pleasantly surprised. The pants were a wonderful fit. I've got some wrinkles in the back but they don't bother me at all. I love the shape of the legs and am really impressed that I didn't need to add length. Although I was also skeptical of the 3/8" seam allowance not allow room for alterations...I didn't need any. No I know what all the fuss is about. I LOVE YOU ELEONORE! I do have one minor alteration to make. The front waist is pull to the back as the front pattern piece is wider than the back. I'm going to shave that amount off the front and add it to the back. Then I'll use my front waistband for the back and vice versa. I can't even describe how comfortable these are. They feel like pajamas. No kidding! I might add front pockets but not sure I will. If you've been on the fence about this pattern, take the plunge, you won't be sorry.

Here's so not so good photos. My dog kept photobombing me and the sun is in the wrong position. No hair or makeup and I didn't want you'll to think I had on a Halloween mask. LOL. I'm going to take better pictures later but I just couldn't wait to spew how much I like this pattern. Don't judge me for the back picture. I don't know why I have the jeans hiked up like that. They really do look and feel good on me. This is also the only top I could find that almost matched. I'm pretty sure I won't wear them together.

I am not an independent pattern person. I like to stick to the Big 4 because I already know most of the adjustments I'll need to make and because of the prices I can get them when they are on sale. When I saw that Jenny had designed the Appleton dress for curvy girls, I didn't hesitate to purchase a hard copy. I know that I'm not nearly patient enough to tape together 40 or more sheets of paper. Nope. Not ever going to happen.

The pattern arrived just a few days after I ordered it. I was shocked that the pattern is actually printed on tissue unlike Jalie which is printed on butcher-like paper. Initially, I wasn't going to trace the pattern but later decided to bite the bullet. It wasn't bad at all. There are only seven pattern pieces and I traced and trimmed them during an episode of Project Runway.

Soon after I received the pattern I realized there was going to be an Appleton Sew-along run by Carrie from the Cashmerette blog team. Well sign me up! Although I did get carried away soon into the schedule, I like how she mapped out the itinerary...

Every couple of days a blog post is made to help you along your way. A big thumbs up to this. The sew along is perfect for the beginning sewer or for a person that just needs a little hand holding to complete a garment. I also think it's especially good for someone with limited sewing time.

Based on the finished garment measurements, I chose the size 20 which is the same size I choose with Big 4 patterns. This pattern has tons of negative ease (8") and I wasn't about to set myself up for failure. I'm a mature woman (58) and I have a mature woman's body. I'm not a fan of showing my bumps, rolls, and back fat to the world!

The other concern I had was with how short the pattern is from shoulder to waist. When I posed the question on the blog I was told that I could just cut across the waist and add any length below that. Uhhhh...no. I've been sewing for 48 years and believe me I know lot. I know that if you have a detail at the waist like waist ties and you add length at or below it...that detail will still be in the same place. I guess wanting to put myself in a position as somewhat of a tester, I sewed the pattern as it was although I did add 4" at the hem. If you go to Pattern Review, nearly every sewers ties are much too high...just like mine are. It's not supposed to be an empire waist. Although the ties are supposed to sit at the high waist, high waist is very subjective and nowhere on the pattern does it suggest or mention the high waist.

The fabric I used has been in my stash for at least six years. It was from the JoAnn's Red Tag table so I'm sure I got it for a steal.

Again although I was supposed to be following the sew along, once I got started, I couldn't stop. I think I spent about five hours sewing. That included watching television, playing with the dog, stopping to record a short video using my loop turner and probably some internet surfing. Other than the hems, I sewed the entire dress on my serger. The seams are 3/8" and I put a reminder in RED on every pattern piece lest I forget and revert to the old 5/8."

I followed the directions exactly even adding the clear elastic at the shoulder, although I didn't follow the pattern layout. The directions are very well written with very good illustrations. The only changes I made other than lengthening 4" as well as lengthened the ties, were to sew the side seam all the way up and added a buttonhole for the left tie to fit through and I added thread belt loops to keep the ties in place. I did sew the buttonhole and thread loops lower in an effort to not have the ties directly below my breast but it barely helped.

So what is my take on the Cashmerette Appleton dress? I give it five stars. It is well drafted I didn't have to do an FBA. But just like the Big 4 few will be able to fit it right out of the envelope. Be warned unless your torso is very short, the ties will be too high. Also it is a deep V-neck which translates into more cleavage showing than I'm really comfortable with. Marking a larger size wouldn't help because the nature of a wrap dress us that it crosses over and under your bust. The good thing is just as the pattern touts...it doesn't gape.

Would I sew it again? Yes, as soon as I find another fabric in my stash with enough yardage but only after I add about 2" somewhere above the waist. Below are some construction photos and a few with me all "Appleton-ed" up. I wish the photos of me were better but it was freezing outside, the wind was blowing, the photographer was impatient and the dog kept trying to photobomb!

I haven't posted any Thursday Thoughts for a while.

My sewing room is a mess.

I think a tornado hit it.

My cutting table is covered with all kinds of crap! From here I can see a male Bratz doll, a skipper doll, a Barbie horse, a pair of shoes, plastic bags fabric and fabric scraps.

I'll have to remedy the above situation before I can sew.

I finished some alterations that have been hanging on the back of my sewing chair all summer.

Another sewing chair is piled high with two pairs of pants I made early in the summer, a sweatshirt, a polo shirt, and fabric.

I'm currently using my backup machine because I have lots of feet for it and I was using some of the one's I really love like the ruffler foot.

My main machine is sitting on the floor and needs to go to the repair shop for a tune-up.

My dog is passed out in the middle of the floor of my sewing room.

My sewing desk is also a mess.

I just need to clean everything in my sewing room.

Are you watching Project Runway?

I'm rooting for Edmond, Ashley and the Indian guy.

I need a white button-done.

I'm having a great time designing and sewing for my Barbie dolls.

I'm hungry.

I don't want to cook!

I was recently inspired by an outfit Erica Bunker made. I knocked-off the look for one of my dolls. Who wore it best? Erica of course but the doll dress is still cute. LOL

My schedule has slowed down a bit. Golf leagues are over and I survived a trip To Key West, Florida. You don't know hot until you experience Key West in the middle of the summer. Bowling starts in three week! Where is the time going?
Now about the help I need. As part of my church's outreach ministry we are trying to send 500 scarves to the women in a Ugandan village as gifts. Most of these women have never received gifts of any kind so we thought the idea of simple scarves would be cherished by them. The scarves should measure (finished width) 21 x 21 inches with nicely finished edges. They could be worn as head scarves of neckerchiefs. Use any blouse-weight fabric. Can you please help? Can you help spread the word? I would need them by August 31 as we want to start packaging them for shipping in early September? If you can help please send them to

Rachelle Green
6380 S Garden Dr
Mount Morris MI 48458
I know I've been MIA for a while but all is well with me. I'm spending all of my spare time golfing and sewing. I'm using Vogue 1247 as a golf skirt.

Of course I lengthened the pattern 6 inches and only have a 1/2" hem. I've sewn it 8 times and have more on tap. I'm also making a couple for a golfing find. I've also sewn two pairs of Vogue 1355 pants. They don't look a lot like the picture but you get the idea.

I finally got a chance to wear my Vogue 1315 dress. I love it. It was super comfortable and I LOVE the pockets. I got lots of complements and the fabric was a hit as well. Sorry the pictures aren't the greatest but my photographer (husband) does not take instruction well! LOL
This post is not sewing related at all. If you are squeamish leave NOW! You've been warned.

It's that time of year when insects will soon be upon us. I for one loathe insects especially bees. I'm allergic to bee stings and avoid them at all costs. We've had a bee problem for a few years now and it was not until all the leaves fell from that trees in that Fall that I understood why. There was a huge bee hive in a tree that was just a few yards away from the front of the house. I'm always armed with insect spray but I don't want to be bothered at all. After pleading with my husband several times to get rid of the hive so that the bees wouldn't come back (my pleadings fell on death ears) I used a 21ft golf ball retriever to knock the hive down.

I wouldn't say I'm adventurous as much as I am curious. I ripped the hive apart and imagine my shock when I realized the hive was full of bees and they were actually in some state of hibernation/cocoon. So...the bees don't come back every year...they never leave! YIKES!
The solid white area is a fully "cocooned" bee. There's one bee per hexagonal cell. If you look closely you can see part of bees protruding from the individual cells.
This is a cross-section of the hive. Full of bees in the "cocooning" process!

Are you wondering what happened to the hive after I dissected it? I put lighter fluid on and burned it and a small portion of the grass to a crisp! I think my bee problem is solved and I had a lesson in bee biology at the same time! I promise my next post will be sewing related. LOL
